Vietnam’s coal-fired generation reached 57TWh during the first four months of 2024, a 43% increase from a year ago. Abnormal temperatures and heat waves have led to increased cooling consumption during the peak summer period.
Vietnam has also seen a significant decline in hydroelectric power generation throughout the year, which has accounted for only 15% of total electricity generation, down from 25% a year ago. Hydroelectric power generation is expected to remain low due to the droughts in 2023, which have caused many hydropower reservoirs to have low water levels. Natural gas output has also decreased by 15% compared to the previous year. Lower power generation from these two power sources has caused Vietnam to heavily rely on coal-fired generation in an attempt to prevent power shortages. Indonesia continues to rank as Vietnam’s largest supplier of thermal coal, accounting for around 42% of total import volume in 2024. Australia also provided substantial volumes to Vietnam, accounting for approximately 22% of imports during the first four months of the year.
